FOR DOG OWNERS:
Please note many beaches will not allow dogs in the summer.
It may be kinder to give a friend or relative a free holiday in your home to 'dog sit' or to put your furry friend in kennels.
A dog heats up very quickly and temperatures in a car, even with the windows open, can reach horrendous levels in a short space of time.
It is not nice to see a dog die from heatstroke.
Should the worst happen;
1...remove the dog from the vehicle as soon as possible and sponge it down with cool(not cold) water. The temperature must be brought down as quickly and as safely as possible.
2...Offer water for it to drink, although the animal may well be unable to do so as the heat may have affected its cognitive reasoning.
3...TAKE IT TO A VET
Signs of heatstroke:
severe panting
salivating (dogs can only sweat through their tongue and pads of their feet)
agitation
disorientation
change in behaviour - ever wondered why normally happy and friendly dogs get snappy and bad tempered on holiday?
check out www.dogtopics.com for more info
If you do feel you must bring your dog - be aware of sunstroke and dehydration (for you and your dog) on the beach. Shade and water are a must. Salt water is NOT an option for your dog to drink.
